Project 01
Milano Community Food Hub
About the project
Milano Community Food Hub reimagines the former municipal market at Piazzale Selinunte in San Siro as a flexible community space where food becomes a catalyst for social connection. Developed around the idea of “OttantaCinque,” the project responds to the neighbourhood’s cultural diversity through a system of adaptable market stalls, shared spaces, landscape interventions and climate-responsive strategies, transforming an underused market into a place for gathering, cooking, exchange and everyday community life.
01 / Reading the neighbourhood
SAN SIRO · MILAN · 13 × 13 CELLSSpatial conditions before the intervention.
This analysis examines the neighbourhood as a spatial system by measuring four physical and accessibility conditions: building intensity, road coverage, proximity to public destinations, and proximity to parks. A regular 50 × 50 m observation grid is used to compare these conditions across the study area. The normalized fields are combined as an equal-weight Phase 01 baseline spatial deprivation index.
Phase 01 — Baseline
How to read it
Each square is an observation unit. The index is the equal-weight mean of the four current fields. It is a spatial proxy for comparing conditions across the study area, not a measure of social or economic poverty.
What is spatial deprivation?
Here, spatial deprivation is a baseline spatial proxy for comparing physical conditions across the study area. It combines four measurable spatial fields; it is not a measure of social or economic poverty.
The four indicators
Mathematical formulation
Equal weights are used in the Phase 01 baseline. Each field is normalized to 0–1 before combination. Destination and Park use the deprivation direction after accessibility inversion.
Research note
This interactive model is the web representation of the Phase 01 baseline spatial deprivation experiment developed from the Grasshopper analysis.
